PAINTINGS BY CHRISTINE JOY

Christine Joy is an artist local to the Pacific Northwest and a graduate of George Fox University.  She received her BFA with a focus in painting.  Here, at www.christinejoypaintings.com you can get more information about her work.

Much of learning to be an artist is learning how to see. This is something Christine has discovered in her desire to learn how to paint. Many of her paintings have been created from life - en plein air. This way of painting poses many challenges - the changing light or weather in a landscape, and the peculiar nature of flowers (they keep moving to face the light, even after they are picked!) These challenges are what make painting en plein air exciting!

Christine learned to paint in the many hours chronic illness provided her as a child and young adult. Christine’s grandmother, Norma Peterson, was her first teacher and greatest encouragement. “Grandma Norma was the living example of making beauty in the middle of pain and hardship.” Together they painted and drew together - and eventually painting became Christine’s full time work and passion. After receiving a BFA in fine art from George Fox in 2014, she continued her learning by studying under other master oil painters whom she admires. Christine has traveled all over the world, learning and painting across Europe, Israel, Nicaragua, Haiti…and is certain that learning and inspiration never ends for the artist!

Christine teaches painting and drawing classes at the Chehalem Cultural Center in the beautiful wine country of Oregon. She enjoys watching others begin their own journey of learning and creating as well.

So fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest, all Christine has to do is walk out her front door or go for a short drive to find natural beauty. As an Oregonian she is particularly drawn to nature and wild spaces for painting inspiration. Working predominantly in oils, Christine paints with the alla prima approach and a style mixing impressionism and realism.

“Painting helps me see more fully the beauty and fragility of this beautiful earth home in which we all live. It has helped me to see meaning (even hope) in the midst of hardship. I am curious and excited to see what else art will show me in the years to come!”
