  • Beginning Oil Painting (Tuesdays from 10am-12pm): Landscapes

    • This class will be great for first time painters as well as intermediate painters. For beginning painters, we will learn how to set up our palettes and go through some of the basics of oils. For more experienced painters who want to explore the oil paint medium, there will be some further tips and tricks. Some other focuses of these classes will include: brushwork, value, and color theory! Here is a basic outline some things we will do in our coming class:

      • Week 1: How to Begin - Here we will learn how to set up our palettes and easels to begin our painting. We will do some basic materials exploration and experimentation.

Week 2: Mixing Colors - In this class we will practice mixing colors to create vibrancy and subtle tones within a painting.

Week 3: Brush work - Brushwork can make such a big difference in a painting to the viewer and the painter alike! In this class Christine will demonstrate how to approach a variety of ways to use a paint brush with oils.

Week 4: Texture - For our last class we will create a painting emphasizing texture. We will use palette knife in our painting techniques on this day!

These classes will go from October 10th-31st.

        For more information, go to:

        https://www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/oil-painting

  • Watercolors: Autumn Landscapes (Wednesdays from 12:30pm-2:30pm)

    • In this 4 week class, we will be painting a variety of scenes in autumn color. Christine will give a demonstration at the beginning of each class and then the rest of class will be painting time for the students. Christine will make sure each student gets attention and tips based on their experience.
Here is a basic outline some things we will do in our coming class:

Week 1: Autumn Trees in a Simple Landscape - Here we will learn how to mix colors to match those of which we can see at the beach.

Week 2: Aspen Forests - In this class we will focus on different kinds of textures and colors found in Aspen forests.

Week 3: Mountains In Autumn - Here we will be working on creating depth in our painting and learning how to paint mountains specific to the Pacific Northwest.

Week 4: Autumn Vineyard Scene - For our final class we will work on painting the autumn colors we see in a vineyard.

Each student is welcome to bring their own photographs of each of these kinds of scenery to work on in class - however there will also be Oregon photos provided in class for inspiration.

This class will go from October 11th through November 1st.

  • Drawing Class: Trees (Wednesdays from 10am-12pm)

    • This coming October 2023 Christine Joy is looking forward to teaching a new drawing class focusing on drawing trees. This class will greatly benefit anyone who is interested in landscape drawing, as trees can be found in most Oregon landscapes. Drawing is such an important skill to learn (and continue learning) as an artist, for both the beginner and the advanced! We will be practicing drawing from life and from photographs - using a variety of mediums (charcoal, pen, pencil).

In this 4 week class, each session will begin with a demonstration by Christine, and then the rest of class will be drawing time for the students. Christine will make sure each student gets attention and tips based on their level of experience. All levels of drawing experience are welcome - and wherever you are at, this class will bring your drawing skills to the next level.

Here is a basic outline some things we will do in our coming class:

Week 1: Starting with leaves, pine needles, and branches. In this class we will be starting with the most basic elements found in a tree. We will be taking a closer look at what makes each tree unique based solely off of its greenery.

Week 2: Drawing Winter Trees (without their leaves)- This week we will be looking specifically at tree trunks and branches minus the greenery. By learning to draw the “bone structure” or woody parts of a tree, we will greatly improve our drawings of them. Christine will bring several different kinds of tree photos to this class, and we will be working to create with accuracy in our drawings.

Week 3: How to draw trees with their foliage - This week Christine will be teaching several tricks on how to draw trees - creating texture and adding shading.

Week 4: How to draw a landscape with variety of trees within it - One of the more complicated scenes to draw is one with lots of varied trees all in the same landscape. Here we will also be working to create focal points in our drawings, as well as composition and simplified textures.

    • This class will go from October 11th through November 1st.

Summer Plein Air Classes - Watercolor

This summer Christine Joy will be teaching weekly (Tuesdays from 10am-noon) watercolor plein air classes at many lovely locations in the Newberg area - from parks to farms and vineyards! There are 7 class days total, and students can sign up for classes at $45 per session. Students can choose from as many classes as are available, and can jump in at any point throughout the summer. All painting experience levels are welcome. Christine would love to paint with you! To see class availability and read more about these classes check the Chehalem Cultural Center’s website:

https://www.chehalemculturalcenter.org/plein-air-watercolor-painting

Below is the class schedule:

Tuesday, July 5th - Little Lavender Farm (Held at the Dundee location)

Choosing A Composition - When painting outdoors, it can be daunting to choose what to paint from a vast and beautiful scenery. In this class we will be focusing on composition (arranging the elements and areas of focus within our painting in a way that pleases the eye). Christine will discuss the rule of thirds, and share some different techniques in beginning a watercolor painting outdoors.

Tuesday, July 12th - Pollinate Gardens

Color Theory Basics - In this class we will discuss the basics of color theory and learn how to paint something naturally vibrant and colorful like a flower. Here we will focus on painting a floral scene, and retain that high chroma color that we love to see in flowers.

Tuesday, July 19th - Koch Family Farms

Color Theory Continued - Many times while painting outdoors we will discover that the paints we have (right out of the tube) are much brighter and more vibrant than what they are in real life. In this class we will be discussing how to neutralize our color palette to match the colors we see in nature.

Tuesday, July 26th - Rogers Landing

How To Paint Water - Water is a subject that can seem tricky to many painters because of its translucent and reflective nature. In this class we will be tackling the challenge of painting a river, and here we will notice how the weather and light affects the way that we paint the water.

Tuesday, August 9th - Location TBD

Brushwork and Texture- Our paint brushes are capable of more than what meets the eye! In this class, Christine will be showing several different ways to use a paint brush to create a variety of textures within our watercolor painting. We will focus on creating smooth and rough textures within our painting.

Tuesday, August 16th - Meraviglioso Winery

Perspective and Linework - Getting the initial sketch of your scene down accurately from the get go is a great way to get your painting started! Here we will be focusing on how the use of lines in our initial sketch can create a sense of perspective in our painting. A vineyard is a perfect place to learn this very thing!

Tuesday, August 23rd - Champoeg Park

How To Paint Trees - Trees are one of the most common elements of a landscape painting (especially in the Pacific Northwest). While they are such a seemingly simple part of a landscape, they are so intricately detailed and complex. By including these complexities and the uniqueness of each tree, our painting will come to life!

Still Life Oil Painting Class

Still Life Oil Painting Class

  • Chehalem Cultural Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This coming April Christine Joy is looking forward to teaching a new oil painting class. Oil is a lovely painting medium that is very “forgiving,” and it gives the artist lots of drying time to paint at a more relaxed pace. In this class we will be learning the very basics in oils and gain confidence with the medium through practicing a variety of key techniques.

In this 4 week class, each session will be focused on learning different approaches to oil painting. We will be working with and seeing what our materials can do, while also working on color mixing and creating texture. Christine will give a demonstration at the beginning of each class and then the rest of class will be painting time for the students. Christine will make sure each student gets attention and tips based on their experience.

This class will be great for first time painters as well as intermediate painters.

Class 1: How to Begin Painting A Still Life - Here we will learn how to set up our palettes and easels to begin our painting. Beginners will do some basic materials exploration and experimentation, while intermediate painters will work on finding a composition and painting a still life Christine has set up for class.

Class 2: Color Theory - In this class we will practice mixing colors to create vibrancy and subtle tones within a painting. Our still life will have a range of colors to practice our color theory!

Class 3: Brushwork and Texture - Brushwork can make such a big difference in a painting! In this class Christine will demonstrate how to approach a variety of ways to use a paint brush with oils. To create more texture, we will be painting with the use of a palette knife as well.

Class 4: Light and Shadow - In this final class our still lives will be set up with more dramatic lighting. Christine will demonstrate how to paint an object that is shiny as well (something made of glass).

Students are welcome to bring an object in to class that they would like to paint in their still life. Our still live setups will mostly consist of common objects like a tea cup and saucer, flowers in a vase, fruit in a basket etc.

Though oils can be a daunting medium at first, there are many strategies we will work on together to make the process not only easier but also enjoyable! Once the students have their oil painting kits made they will be able to use it for a long time to come.

Intro to Landscape - Watercolor Class (4 weeks)

  • Chehalem Cultural Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This coming April Christine Joy is looking forward to teaching a new watercolor class and the Chehalem Cultural Center which is focussed on landscape painting. One spectacular thing about Oregon is how much variety there is in natural beauty - mountains, rivers, lakes, forests and more!

In this 4 week class, each session will be dedicated to one aspect of  landscape painting. Christine will give a demonstration at the beginning of each class and then the rest of class will be painting time for the students. Christine will make sure each student gets attention and tips based on their experience.

This class will be great for first time painters as well as intermediate painters. For beginning painters we will learn how to set up our palettes and go through some of the basics of watercolors. For more advanced painters there will be further tips and tricks to approaching different parts of a landscape. In this class we will be working from photographs and learning how to take what we see in a photo and create a painting. Some focuses of these classes will include: brushwork, texture, and of course some color theory! Here is a basic outline some things we will do in our coming class:

Class 1: The Basics - Here we will learn how to paint a simple landscape, where we will be establishing our horizon line and deciding our composition.

Class 2: Depth - In this class we will focus on creating a sense of depth in our painting. We will be painting scenes with mountains and layers of hills in this class.

Class 3: Trees - On this day we will be painting trees, and learning how to capture the specific nature of the tree we are painting from (there are so many different trees in Oregon so we will be covering some of the most common trees we see in the PNW).

Class 4: Water - How do we paint something that is transparent? This will be the topic of our final class, focussing on reflections, transparency, and some color theory.

Each student is welcome to bring their own photographs of each of these kinds of scenery to work on in class - however there will also be photos provided in class for inspiration.

Though watercolors can seem like a tricky medium to some, there are many strategies we will work on together to make the process not only easier but also more enjoyable! Watercolors are an amazingly compact medium making the supplies easy to take anywhere. Once the students have their watercolor kits made they will be able to use it for many years to come.

Watercolor Workshop

Watercolor Workshop

  • Chehalem Cultural Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In this 4 week class we will explore painting with watercolors. Each day Christine will begin class with a demonstration and lesson, and then the remainder of the class will be for our painting project of the day. While this medium can be challenging for many artists, there are some very important and helpful techniques we will be discussing to help make a successful painting. This is a fun medium where we can explore color theory and brushwork. Someone who has never touched paint before will be able to take this class and learn the basics of watercolors, and the experienced artist will work on the refining of their watercolor skills.

Here is a brief layout of our 4 weeks together:

  • Week 1: Familiarity with Materials - Here we will learn how to set up our paint palette and familiarize ourselves with our paper and brushes. We will do some basic experimenting with various elements (salt, scratching, dry-brush etc.) that affect our watercolor painting.

  • Week 2: Color Theory - In this part of the class we will be exploring how to mix our colors while avoiding muddiness. Because color theory is such an important part of painting we will make our own color wheel and experimental color swatches to refer to.

  • Week 3: Still Life - Here we will practice our skills we have learned thus far on a still life set up by Christine. We will focus on communicating light in our paintings; first - we identify where the light is coming from, and second - how we can communicate temperature in painting by using our color palette.

  • Week 4: Landscape - In this final class of the series we will be painting landscapes, and focusing on creating depth in our painting. We will experiment with techniques of creating texture, and work on varying our colors throughout the landscape scene.
